Why is Captain Marvel a Captain

When Carol Danvers arrives on earth early in the film and barely slams into a blockbuster video store, it causes a smile, because you know we are in an era in which streaming and video on demand were still foreign words. But it is also - self-deprecating? - Symbolic image because Marvel owner Disney wants to bring its own streaming service onto the market in the next few months and contributes to the system change à la Streaming kills the Videostar.

Not to take this attitude of oneself too seriously, but the product all the more, works perfectly and such little things make up the humor that “Captain Marvel” cultivates. In addition, there are old friends, such as the agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), who is valued in the MCU. In addition, the film is technically on the standard of Marvel and is told fluently. One or two twists are easy to guess from the beginning, but that doesn't diminish the story of the woman from space, but the cat Goose and the 11-year-old Monica are an asset as a cool sidekick on earth.

We already discussed the film at its theatrical release (review) and therefore rummaged around in the background to the film at the start of the home theater and found 11 facts:

The animated Marvel logo at the beginning of the film pays respectful tribute to Stan Lee. Lee was the creator of many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and passed away on November 12, 2018. Stan Lee also has his traditional cameo in "Captain Marvel". At which point in the film should of course not be revealed.

"Captain Marvel" is the 21st feature film within the MCU and belongs to phase 3 of the cinematic universe. At the box office, the film grossed $ 1.128 billion (as of July 2019). It is also the first film in the MCU that shows a female heroine in the lead role. "Ant-Man and the Wasp" also has a heroine, but in the team with Ant-Man.

In an interview with Brie Larson, Focus.de talks about the time required to make a film the size of “Captain Marvel”. She says: “If you factor in everything, from nine months of preparation over 75 days of shooting to synchronization work and re-shoots, that adds up to about a year and a half. That's a lot of time now that I think about it. " (Source: focus.de)

The cat Goose is played by four professionally trained cats in the film. It is interesting that the leading actress Brie Larson is highly allergic to cats and therefore shot them with dolls instead of real cats. (various sources)

MCU mastermind Kevin Feige told at an event in the USA that Carol Danvers, as Captain Marvel's real name is, should already appear in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015). However, the creatives discarded the plan because it didn't feel right after all.

In an interview with VIP.de, the leading actress Brie Larson speaks about the significance that a promise for “Captain Marvel” had for her. She had to consider whether she could accept the loss of privacy from increasing awareness. She thought she was smarter than she thought and would make it. She got advice from colleague Chris Evans (Captain America). But he only means: if he grows a beard, it will remain as good as unrecognized in public. That wasn't much of a help. (Source: vip.de)

In the part of the film that takes place in the 90s, Carol Danvers usually wears a white T-shirt with a logo of the band Nine Inch Nails. However, the shirt is not officially released by the band, but a bootleg, a pirated copy. This is recognizable because the rectangle around the band logo should have the same width as the lettering. That's why Marvel and the Nine Inch Nails have produced a special Captain Marvel NIN shirt. It is available in the band's shop for a limited time.

In "Captain Marvel" reference is made in various points to the other films from the MCU. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is much younger, which was made possible by digital effects, and you can find out why he is losing his eye. Another topic is the extraterrestrial race of the Kree, which can later be seen several times in the MCU (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and the tesseract, an extraterrestrial energy source, is introduced. The film clarifies, sometimes prominently and sometimes more casually, background information on previous films that are set later. Carol Danvers also bears the name Avenger as a fighter jet pilot, which is what inspired Nick Fury to name the Avengers.

After “Captain America: The First Avenger”, it is the second film to play “Iron Man” (2008) prior to the start of the MCU.

Carol Danvers slams into a branch of the video rental chain Blockbuster Video early on in the film when she reaches Earth. This is no coincidence, because the director (directed together with Anna Boden) and screenwriter Ryan Fleck used to work in one of the chain's shops.

In the scene in the credits, you can see Captain Marvel in a prominent group. Brie Larson played alone for the scene, didn't know who else would be in the scene and only played her part in the conversation. Then the scenes were put together technically. (Various sources)

"Captain Marvel" is now available in various versions in stores. In addition to the film, the Blu-Ray (1-Disc) that we have before us offers additional scenes, breakdowns from the shoot, featurettes and an audio commentary.
