Why are studio apartments so expensive

This is how the different types of New York apartments are designed

Living in New York is a fascinating subject. We know that space is scarce and living space is expensive. But how can you imagine apartments? How big are they, how are they cut? We present the most common types of apartments with typical layouts. Most of the apartments in New York fall into one of these categories

Studio apartments

Apartments in which the living area, bedroom and kitchenette are in one room are called studios in New York. It is one of the most common types of apartments. The bathroom and toilet are separate, but usually very small.

There are several types of studios:

Efficiency Studio, also called Bachelor (bachelor) studio: particularly small studio.

Alcove Studio: L-shaped studio, in addition to the main room, it also has a living area with enough space for a bed.

Convertible Studio: like an Alcove Studio. But the niche is larger and has space for more than just a bed. It can be compared to a small room.

Studios can be imagined with a size of 40 to 50 square meters.

Apartments with bedrooms

These are apartments with separate rooms. The specified number of bedrooms always includes a living room. A one-bedroom apartment consists of 2 rooms, a living room and a bedroom, a two-bedroom apartment consists of 3 rooms, etc. A bedroom must have a window and a door to be considered as such.

The living room is usually the largest room in the home. The word bedroom does not have to be taken literally, as the rooms are often not used as pure bedrooms. For example, a one-bedroom apartment can also be seen as an apartment with two rooms. Often two people live there - one in the living room, the other in the bedroom. A 2-bedroom apartment is often shared by three residents, etc. Nobody then has a pure bedroom.

Types of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments:

Junior One-Bedroom Apartment

A junior one-bedroom is something in between a studio and a real one-bedroom apartment, but mostly more similar to a studio.

It consists of a larger room and a smaller room. Most of the time, the second room has no window, and often not even a door. So it is not actually a bedroom, but is called that in marketing (but not in official documents such as rental agreements).

Real one-bedroom apartment

A real one-bedroom apartment consists of two rooms, both with windows and doors, a bathroom and usually a separate kitchen.

Junior 4 One-Bedroom Apartment

A junior 4 one-bedroom apartment is something in between a real one-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom apartment. The name comes from the four areas that exist: bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining area.

A typical size for a one-bedroom apartment is around 60 - 65 square meters.

2-bedroom apartment

There is a living room, usually a large bedroom (master bedroom) and often with its own bathroom, a smaller bedroom and a separate kitchen.

Typical size for a two-bedroom apartment is around 70 - 75 square meters.

Apartments that are larger than a 2-bedroom apartment

Such apartments are rare, but they do exist. Many are in old, stately residential buildings, which is why they are often called classic apartments.

Classic 6 apartment: living room, two large bedrooms and one smaller bedroom. There is also a dining room, kitchen and two bathrooms.

Classic 7 and 8 apartments: The same as a Classic 6 with one or two additional bedrooms.

Lofts

A real loft is an old factory floor that has been converted into living space. They are large, open spaces with high ceilings and tall windows that let in lots of light.

The term loft has gained a lot of prestige over the past few decades and the demand is high. For this reason, residential buildings with apartments have been built in the last 20 years that are cut like lofts and advertised as lofts. However, they are not lofts in the original sense, as they are located in modern buildings without prior industrial use.

Some lofts are several hundred square meters.

Railroad and Shotgun Apartments

Railroad Apartments get their name from the English word for railroad because the rooms are laid out in the shape of wagons.

Railroad Apartments are long and thin, and the rooms are lined up one behind the other and connected by a single hallway that runs the length of the apartment. Each room has a door to the hall.

A variant of the Railroad Apartment is the Shotgun Apartment, a Railroad Apartment without the hallway. The rooms connect directly without any transition. Sharing an apartment like this can be problematic as you have to go through a roommate's room to get to your own. It is not certain where the name Shotgun Apartment comes from.

Railroad and Shotgun Apartments were built in the 19th century when many poorer parts of the city were so extremely crowded that it is hard to imagine even today.
