Master's degree in electrical engineering and information technology

The master’s course has a standard period of study of four semesters and can be started either in the winter semester or in the summer semester. Since this is a German-language course, the course can be completed entirely in German. However, many courses are offered in English, so that a purely English-language course of study is also possible (however, proof of German language skills is also required in this case). The rough structure of the course for First-year students from the summer semester 2020 symbolizes the next house.

Core areas (at least 15 credits from the beginning of the summer semester 2020)

Based on the current 9 Centers of Competence (CoCs), 8 core areas were defined, which reflect the study orientation of the CoCs and contain the core modules. The naming is therefore geared towards study profiles and related to the subject areas of the CoCs, but not identical. As a starting point, students choose their 3 core modules from a core area. The core module catalogs consist of modules that, based on the competencies of the first degree, address methodical and demanding topics that are essential for further deepening in this topic area. Students lay at least 15 credits from the selected core area. You must have these 15 credits by the end of the 2nd semester be passed. A list of the core modules can be found in the module lists.

Internships (5-15 credits)

The implementation of methodological skills in the practical work environment is essential for engineers. Therefore, students take at least 5 credits in the form of internships or project internships. In order to achieve a balance between methodological and practical competencies, the acquisition of credits is limited to 15, this corresponds roughly to one internship per study semester (excluding the semester of the master’s thesis).

Elective modules in electrical engineering and information technology (0 - 45 credits from the beginning of the summer semester 2020)

The course offers a wide range of modules to choose from, which are structured in the form of in-depth recommendations and build on the skills acquired in the respective core modules. Further orientation is provided by marking the relevance of a module to the research area of ​​each of the CoCs in the module list. Students earn a total of 65 credits from this as well as from the core modules and internships. It is possible to deepen yourself individually, for example through a higher credit portion of core modules or a combination of two specialization recommendations.

Scientific seminar (5 credits)

Various modules from the chairs and professorships of the faculty are available. From this, each student chooses a module that is included in the course with 5 credits. In a scientific seminar, every student at the respective chair or professorship receives a specialist topic that matches the module title and which he / she deals with scientifically. For example, this could be an extensive international literature search on a current research topic. The student then summarizes his / her results and findings in a written elaboration and presents his / her results in a lecture.

Elective modules to supplement additional subjects (8 credits from the beginning of the summer semester 2020)

Non-technical elective modules are to be taken as part of this section of the program. Elective modules from the entire range of courses at TUM that are not included in the course, not offered by the EI Faculty and have no technical relevance (e.g. not from mechanical engineering or computer science) can be taken freely. Non-technical modules from other universities are also possible. These should therefore be modules that are not directly related to the selected engineering specialization, for example foreign languages, project management or business modules. It should be noted that a total of 8 credits are earned, of which at least 3 credits must be of a general educational nature. It is a study achievement; if module grades are awarded, these do not contribute to the final grade.

Research Practice (12 credits)

In preparation for a later scientific activity in research and development, an insight into current research topics within the framework of research practice is provided during the course. The research practice spans a total of 9 weeks (full-time) and is assessed with 12 credits. However, the practice can also be completed in two separate parts (4.5 weeks each with 6 credits). The research practice is a study achievement and is not included in the final grade. The research practice is supervised and assessed by a university professor from the EI faculty. It must be registered and evidenced by a report and a lecture.

Master's Thesis (30 credits)

The course is completed by the final thesis, the so-called Master's Thesis. This is an extensive, scientific work that contains a subject-specific task. The master's thesis is the final achievement in the course. An early start is only possible in exceptional cases and upon request (does not apply to those starting their studies before SS20). After registering for the master’s thesis, the student has 6 months to process it. The master's thesis is valued with 30 credits, which corresponds to a full-time job of 24 weeks. Extensions are only possible after the approval of the examination board if there are good reasons. The subject and examiner of a master’s thesis must be a university professor from Faculty EI or an examiner appointed by the examination board. The completion of the master's thesis consists of a written elaboration and a lecture, whereby the lecture is not included in the grading. The thesis can be written either in German or in English. The completion date of the thesis is the last performance that was rendered, i.e. either the submission of the thesis or the time of the presentation.

Admission requirement

For admission to the master’s program, a bachelor's / master’s / diploma or comparable university degree in electrical engineering, information technology or a similar course is required.

A decision on the equivalence and comparability of a degree program can only be made during the application process. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make any statements about this in advance.

Sufficient German language skills must also be proven. This is possible, for example, with a German-language university degree or a German university entrance qualification. Further information on language certificates can be found here.

Part-time arrangements

Since the 2014 summer semester, TUM has offered the opportunity to study the master's degree in electrical engineering and information technology part-time (50% and 66%).

The following steps are necessary for a new application for part-time study or a change to part-time study:

  • Timely application for the desired part-time course within the master's application deadlines (April 1 to May 31 for the following winter semester, October 1 to November 30 for the following summer semester)
  • Coordination of the curriculum with the academic advisory service or the examination board

In the part-time course, participation in modules and the associated exams is limited to 15 to a maximum of 17 credits (50% level) or 20 to a maximum of 22 credits (66% level) per semester.
