Lastruperin is Corona hope: Biontech founder Türeci

Status: 11/10/2020 2:16 p.m.

With growing confidence in an effective corona vaccine, the Biontech founders Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci are moving into focus. Türeci spent her childhood in Lastrup.

The now 53-year-old lived for ten years in the community in the district of Cloppenburg and went to school there, as reported by NDR 1 Lower Saxony. Her father, who moved to Germany from Istanbul, worked as a surgeon in what was then the hospital. The family lived across from the clinic, the St. Elisabeth monastery. Today there is a retirement home there.

As a child, Türeci wanted to "become a nun" in order to help

Older people from Lastrup are still aware of the father who is said to have often taken his daughter to the hospital, as NDR 1 Lower Saxony further reports. The girl was so enthusiastic about the operation there that she even wanted to "become a nun" because of the many Catholic sisters, as Türeci once said in an interview. You wanted to help people.

Scientist founds Biontech with husband Şahin

Özlem Türeci later decided to study medicine in Homburg, Saarland, where she met her husband Uğur Şahin. Both are united by a passion for the job: on the morning of the wedding they were in the laboratory and returned there after the registry office, as the doctorate said in an interview. Together with the oncologist, she switched to the Mainz University Medical Center as a lecturer in 2000. After the biopharmaceutical company Ganymede, Şahin and Türeci founded Biontech in 2008. The 53-year-old heads the clinical development department there.

Türeci and Şahin are considered to be multi-billionaires

Since the novel coronavirus became known, Biontech has been developing a vaccine - and is one of the great hopes. With their biotechnology company, which actually develops cancer therapies, Türeci and Şahin are now among the 100 richest Germans. The newspaper "Welt am Sonntag" ranks them 93rd on the list with assets of 2.4 billion euros. Nevertheless, they are described by colleagues and companions as modest scientists.
