Who hosted Miss Universe 2018

Miss Universe 2018 comes from the Philippines

The most beautiful woman in the universe comes from the Philippines this year: 24-year-old Catriona Gray was named "Miss Universe" in the Thai capital Bangkok. In the end, the music student was ahead of the candidates from South Africa and Venezuela. Last year's Miss Universe, South African Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, presented the winner with the crown.

In a final round lasting several hours, ten national beauty queens from Africa, Asia and America presented themselves. They wore bathing suits and nightgowns designed by the Thai princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. US singer and Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo provided the musical accompaniment.

Innovations in the competition

The winners of the Miss elections from several dozen countries have been competing for the title of "Miss Universe" since 1952. This year the jury was made up exclusively of women. Another innovation: since the beauty contest abandoned the principle six years ago that all candidates must be "naturally born" women, Angela Ponce from Spain was the first transsexual applicant for the title.

Her candidacy attracted a lot of attention and many saw her as a favorite. Angela Ponce is committed to greater acceptance of transgender people and hopes for a "more tolerant and respectful" society, as she says. She was eliminated in the semi-finals (Top 20), but was greeted with applause when she came back later Returned stage.

Empowered women?

The competition, which was formerly owned by US President Donald Trump, had the motto "Empowered Women" this year and claims to be "an organization made by women for women". Comedian Steve Harvey, who hosted the event together with supermodel Ashley Graham, was criticized in this context. The moderator has been criticized several times in recent years for sexist or racist views.
