The mechanical tachograph or colloquially also called tachograph or speedometer disk, was a paper disk that was used on vehicles for freight transport in Germany, which was before May 1, 2006 were allowed, the speed of the truck, the kilometers covered and the driving and rest times were recorded.

From that date onwards it became EC recording equipment, or digital tachograph, introduced due to an EU regulation, which now functions as a digital tachograph. The device has a chip that stores all important data, such as B. saves working hours.

The truck driver has a driver card with which he logs on to the EC control device. In addition to this card, there is also a workshop, control and company card with which data on the device, such as working hours, can be read out. This data is saved on a sealed chip for 365 days and on the driver card, which is tied to a person, i.e. the driver, for 28 days.

If the truck driver comes to a control, a digital control device of the police can display all driving and rest times. If these have not been complied with properly, it can quickly become expensive. In addition to the truck driver, the head of the company is asked to pay for the fines.
