What does a beginner blogging need

Blog Start: Tips for Beginners

How do you start a blog and what should you watch out for as a beginner?

When I discovered the call for a blog parade (more on this later) with the topic "Your tips for blog beginners" in my daily blog press review on the Internet blogger's website, I found the topic so interesting that I changed my actual to-do list. Instead of a tutorial on the Divi theme, today there are general suggestions and tips for blogging. But first a short reference to the detailed article on the topic of creating a WordPress blog on our sister site wphelp.de.

What tips can I recommend to a newcomer to the blogging scene?

First tip: Don't collect tips !?

... at least not too many!

Sounds strange, but has a background of experience: I wanted to start right at the beginning ...

… so that's how correct correct!

So I researched extensively and so intensively that on the one hand I invested a lot of time in research and on the other hand I pushed the actual blog start further and further back. In retrospect, I could have started much earlier and I had already read the most important information after a few articles on the subject. I would have started blogging much faster and would have seen successes faster if I had started earlier and relied more on learning by doing.

It's easy to read more tips and suggestions while you're blogging ... but read more blogging than tips!

Second tip: goal orientation ... what is your goal?

I know the question is difficult to answer for some, especially at the beginning. And it is also not absolutely necessary that you define your blogging goal to a precise target group, visitor numbers and sales with decimal places.

However, a more precise destination determination helps to define the first steps. Many decisions are easier with a clearer goal in mind: such as what should the domain and blog name be, how broad do I want to position myself at the start, how much time do I plan for my blog project?

Business or hobby blog

I think that is the first question / decision: Do you want to help your / a company to be more successful through blogging or is it about running a hobby blog on a topic or topics of your choice?

First of all, the business blog requires more attention in terms of professional public image. The presentation (the theme) should appear tidy and your contributions should not show any major deficiencies in terms of spelling, legibility and consistency. You should pay attention to the topic of security right from the start in order not to have to experience unpleasant surprises such as a hacked company blog or data loss due to a lack of backup precautions.

With the hobby blog, the above-mentioned points are certainly not wrong, but here you should focus more on the activity of blogging itself at the beginning than on dealing too intensively with the external image and technology.

With both variants, you should find out about the legal framework at the beginning, because unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) private hobby bloggers also have to observe some rules in order not to get any legal problems.

Ultimate tip for blog beginners: continuity

From my point of view, the ultimate tip for blog beginners is to ensure continuity.

As soon as the basic technical requirements are met, it is essential to start writing and ensure that the weekly planning is regular.

Why is continuity so important?

The core of blogging is regular writing (if necessary, regular podcasting or taking photos, if that's your point). Without published articles there is no blog or the existing blog stagnates. It is less important whether you blog daily, weekly or monthly. But the continuous rhythm is what counts.

And to make that happen, you have to take time to write regularly. And you will quickly notice that blogging usually involves more than just Typing texts on your keyboard. You have to find topics, prepare articles by researching, taking screenshots, interviewing someone, evaluating data, etc. Last but not least, the system maintenance of your blog is part of it and e.g. responding to comments or activity in social networks and forums.

It's hard to assess, but once your blog system is up, I'd plan a minimum of two hours a week - rather more. The bigger your ambitions, the more time you have to invest.

Since blogging has a lot to do with writing, it is worth looking into the subject of "writing". One of the pieces of advice that is repeated in this area is: “To write better, you have to write more!”. This does not mean the length of the text, but regular writing.

Patience is also part of continuity

In the beginning, patience is important. I don't want to rule out that your blog, of all things, will start immediately due to favorable framework conditions. Experience has shown, however, that in most cases patience and perseverance is required before the first sense of achievement can set in. And that means weeks and months rather than days.

Certainly today, like 10 years ago, the “From 0 to 1 on Google in a few days” recipe for success is advertised on every internet corner. Most of these guides and offers should be rated like the ubiquitous diet promises. In principle, there are also successful diet methods, but none that lead to the goal without a certain amount of effort and perseverance.

My blogger story

I set up my first WordPress blog myself in 2006. However, for a long time I was more concerned with the technology and all of it than writing articles. In 2008 I actively and regularly ran three blog projects. Since then, there have been longer blog breaks for professional reasons.

Blogging has given me a lot of experience in writing texts and how publishing on the Internet works. That also paid off professionally for me in other ways. Not only in the contacts I made, but also because I was able to improve my writing skills. Since the beginning of this year, I've been writing articles on a regular basis again.

Last tip: communication and interactivity

The first focus should be on writing articles, but communicating with others comes right after that. Activity through comments in other blogs, forums and social networks draws the attention of others to you and your blog. There are a number of actions that can be taken to assist you in such activities. This includes blog sticks, blog parades and just discovered by the internet blogger: blog comment rounds.

In a blog parade, the organizing blogger specifies a topic on which other bloggers can then submit articles for a limited period of time. These are then collected and linked by the organizer. A good opportunity for every blogger to get involved, to get in touch with others and also to be linked.

This article was created as part of just such a blog parade: “Your tips for blog beginners” by Alexander Liebrecht the internet blogger. There you will find more articles with tips for blog beginners ... but as I said: it is better to start writing an article about your first steps as a blogger than reading too much 😉!

PS: You can find a more detailed description of blog parades on Blogparaden.de. Many current blog parades are also displayed there, so that it is easier to find a thematically appropriate one.
