Is cooking on cast iron dangerous?

How dangerous are non-stick pans and pots?

Even if we eat healthily and drink the cleanest water, we cannot escape the toxins. The pollution of the air, water and soil puts a strain on our body. We ingest toxic compounds from various sources on a daily basis. One of these sources is the cookware in many households.

One of the most common cookware is non-stick pans and pots. These are also often referred to as Teflon cookware. They are very practical to avoid burning and very easy to clean.

Are non-stick pans and pots dangerous?

Fluoropolymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and substances containing polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAs) are commonly used to make conventional non-stick cooking surfaces.

These materials are extremely toxic to the human body and the environment. The compounds contain fluorinated chemicals, which provide the familiar slippery surface.

However, when these materials are exposed to heat, most nonstick cookware becomes a source of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This long chain chemical compound has been linked to a number of health problems, including thyroid disease, female infertility, organ damage, and development and reproductive problems. Inflammation of the liver, disorders of lipid metabolism, reduced birth weight and size, changed hormone levels and a weakened immune system can also result.

Environmental protection agencies have also declared perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) "likely to be carcinogenic". In other words, substances that cause cancer.

Simple alternatives and solutions

Healthier options include ceramic and enameled cast iron cookware and glass. With a short soaking time in warm water, these types of cookware are also easy to clean.

Ceramic cookware is becoming more and more popular thanks to its non-stick cooking surface, without traces of PTFE or PFOA.

Ceramic cookware is safer and more environmentally friendly than traditional non-stick cookware.

cast iron

Cast iron cookware is extremely robust, easy to clean and non-stick when used correctly. Cast iron cooking is a great way to get many of the benefits of nonstick cookware, but without experiencing exposure to harmful substances.

Heat-resistant glass

Glass is not the most dynamic cooking material, but it is very suitable for dishes in the oven. When buying, you should make sure that the glass is heat-resistant and of high quality.

Aluminum, stainless steel, and copper cookware also have some disadvantages. Aluminum is a strongly suspected cause of Alzheimer's disease. Stainless steel has alloys that contain nickel, chromium, molybdenum and carbon, which is particularly important if you are allergic to nickel. Copper cookware usually consists of other metals that are harmful.

The healthier our cookware, the less we absorb toxic compounds. This small change will have a very positive effect on our health, well-being and energy in the long term.
