However, when these materials are exposed to heat, most nonstick cookware becomes a source of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This long chain chemical compound has been linked to a number of health problems, including thyroid disease, female infertility, organ damage, and development and reproductive problems. Inflammation of the liver, disorders of lipid metabolism, reduced birth weight and size, changed hormone levels and a weakened immune system can also result.
Environmental protection agencies have also declared perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) "likely to be carcinogenic". In other words, substances that cause cancer.
Simple alternatives and solutions
Healthier options include ceramic and enameled cast iron cookware and glass. With a short soaking time in warm water, these types of cookware are also easy to clean.
Ceramic cookware is becoming more and more popular thanks to its non-stick cooking surface, without traces of PTFE or PFOA.
