Is Slumdog Millionaire a Bollywood Movie

What Bollywood thinks of Slumdog Millionaire ...

Would the film about an Indian boy who becomes a millionaire be successful without a western director?

Amitabh Bachchan is undoubtedly the greatest Indian superstar and has been a leading opinion maker in Indian culture for decades. Now he has caused a stir on his blog because he suspected that the British film Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle had such a success because it did not come from the pen of an Indian director. Conversely, this would mean that the western world would not celebrate the same film if it came from Bollywood or India. The film about a poor Indian boy who appeared on the TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? wins and only longs for his great love, received 11 BAFTA nominations last week, which is an indicator of success at the Academy Awards.

While Amitabh Bachchan now perceives his statements as distorted, because he only wanted to offer the option of discussion on his blog, the “Western” press today publishes several reports about the incident and asks the same question: Do Bollywood films suffer from their injustice regardless of their quality Image? What would have become a millionaire of a film like Slumdog if its director was named Akshay Kumar or Shahid Kapur? There were already heated debates on the prejudices about Indian cinema on moviepilot (here and here).

Amitabh Bachchan is quoted as saying on Reuters: “It's all about the fact that the Slumdog Millionaire idea came from an Indian, was conceived and filmed by a Western director, and is attracting worldwide creative attention. Without [the western director], the film might not have this. If Slumdog Millionaire portrays India as a filthy slumbering third world developing country and thereby causes disgust and pain to the nationalists and patriots, one should point out that filthy slums also exist and grow in the most developed nations. "

Slumdog Millionär starts in German cinemas on March 19, 2009. What do you think: Would Slumdog Millionaire have been just as successful under Indian direction or in Bollywood production?
