What is a 22 long rifle

gun

Small bore rifle

Only single shots that fire rimfire cartridges in caliber 5.6mm (.22 lfb / lr) are permitted. The maximum weight is between 6,500 and 8,000g, depending on the discipline. Special shooting clothing, usually shoes, trousers, jacket and gloves for the supporting hand, is permitted.

The target is 50m away from the shooter, the ten measures 10.4mm in diameter. The lower rings follow at a distance of 8.0mm. If you put the distance and diameter of the ten in relation, this is even smaller than with the air rifle.

In one discipline, a target 100 m away is also shot at. Here the ten measures 50mm in diameter and the ring spacing is 25mm.

The following disciplines are carried out with the small bore rifle:

  • Small bore rifle 100m
  • Small bore rifle 100m rest and small bore rifle 50m rest
  • Small bore rifle 50m 3x20 and small bore rifle 3x40 (Olympic)
  • Small bore rifle 50m telescopic sight / rear sight
  • Small bore rifle 50m lying down

Shooting with small caliber weapons is permitted from the age of 16 (with parental consent). But even younger people can already become active if they receive a special permit from the police. For this, various requirements have to be met, which are regulated by the Weapons Act. Special authorization, a weapon possession card (WBK for short, not a weapon license) is required to acquire a small-bore weapon.

As with the air rifle, in this discipline all shots are fired in the (free) standing position. The rifle can weigh up to 7,500 g, the trial shooting takes place in a separate trial period (15 minutes).

Small bore rifle 100m rest and small bore rifle 50m rest

With entry into age class III (from 51 years) there is the possibility of participating in the additional disciplines within the so-called senior classes. The shot is either standing or sitting, in both cases the rifle may be placed on a support. The trial shooting is included in the competition time for support disciplines, so there is no separate trial period. Due to the high density of results and performance, this discipline is generally only rated in tenth rings at championships. A special feature of the small bore rifle is that the bench rest shooters can choose between a "classic" rear sight and a telescopic sight. These previously separate evaluations were merged, since no significant differences in results could be determined.

Small bore rifle 50m 3x20 and small bore rifle 3x40 (Olympic)

In addition to the number of shots, the three-position disciplines only differ in a few details, which are based on the earlier distinction between the small bore sport rifle and the small bore free rifle. Ultimately, only the maximum weight of the rifle remained, which is 6,500g for the sport rifle (3x20) and 8,000g for the free rifle (3x40). Before the kneeling attack, the athletes have 15 minutes for any number of test shots. The modifications to the rifle and the test shooting before the two other stops must be carried out within the specified competition time.

The 3x40 program is part of the Olympic competitions, whereby women will complete this number of shots for the first time in 2020. Up until Rio 2016, the women's three-position competition was held over 3x20 shots.

  Shots Time (min) *
3x20 half-program (until below the state championship) 30 65
3x20 full program (compulsory from the state championship) 60 105
3x40 full program 120 165

Small bore rifle 50m telescopic sight / rear sight

In the past, only a telescopic sight with up to twelve times magnification was used in this discipline, today the use of a diopter is also allowed. Thus, a discipline was created which is intended to simplify the transition from the 10m compressed air to the 50m small-caliber competitions, especially in the junior sector. All 30 shots are fired in a free-standing position, the trial shooting takes place in a separate trial period (15 minutes).
