When did it not work to trust your gut?

FeelIntuition - Learn to listen to your gut instinct

What is intuition

Contrary to popular belief, intuition is not a special gift with which chosen people are born. Everyone has intuition. Studies show that we girls are more generously equipped than men. Our mind is divided into two systems. On the one hand there is the analytical, conscious system. It works slowly, but makes thoughtful and careful decisions. You will solve most of the tasks during the day with the help of this system.

It is different with the instinctive system. This is the subconscious that processes information quickly and automatically and then passes it on to you as intuition. Have you ever met someone and found yourself super personable on the first impression? - Hello, intuition! How can you as a newbie learn to listen to your inner voice? Here are 6 tips to help you build your intuition.

Strengthening intuition: this is how you learn to listen to your gut feeling

1. Psst, listen up!

It's as simple as it sounds. Your intuition speaks to you all the time. But if you don't listen, you can't receive anything. Often we are so busy with what's going on around us that we don't even notice what's going on inside us. Shift your focus and observe your inner voice. Be mindful and register what is happening inside you. Concentrate on your experiences in the present moment. With a little practice you will learn very quickly to understand your inner voice.

2. Pause your inner critic

Each of us has this voice in our head that constantly has to comment on everything. Often she doesn't have anything positive to report. The criticizes, condemns, laughs. To sharpen your intuition, try to mute the critical voice for a few moments. Continue your inner dialogue without ridicule or criticism. This is how you give your intuition space to come out.

3. Feel your body

You know your intuition by feeling it. It gives you goose bumps, makes your breath shallower, radiates into your stomach or you just feel it  »in the little toe«. When you feel that something is right, you feel very clear and strengthened by your inner voice. Especially at the beginning it often seems difficult to trust your intuition. But over time you will get better and better at it. Practice pays off!

4. Pay attention to your surroundings

The instinctive system mixes the information it receives from the outside with your previous experience and conjures up personalized advice for your decisions. The more information it gets from the environment, the more precise its answer to your questions can be.

5. Sweet dreams

In the dream the subconscious processes information that it collects about the day. So they contain a lot of data about you. Pay attention to your dreams, because they can give you a lot of input that you cannot get when you are awake. In order to be able to remember my dreams in the morning, I write a dream diary and set myself an intention before going to sleep. Try it!

6. Get creative

Creative activities such as painting, drawing, making music, writing, (you name it) let the analytical system fall silent for a while. This gives the intuition more room to develop and you can hear it much more clearly. By the way, nature has a similar effect. So out into the countryside!

Should you now blindly trust your gut feeling?

Of course not. Intuition is without question a powerful tool that will surely give you important insights and pointers in some situations. Still, it is important to find a healthy balance between a rational and intuitive thankfulness. Only with a personal combination of rationality and intuition are you able to make the best decisions for yourself. You have to adjust the ratio of the two for yourself depending on the situation.
