Each horn comb is unique, no two are alike. The natural material varies in color and marbling pattern, from pale yellow to deep black. Horn combs are unique in their elegance and feel. Irregularities are not a defect, but a typical feature of handmade horn products.

Which horn comb for which hair? A little comb guide

Curls and long, thick hair

A long, flowing mane of curly hair is probably the dream of many women. But there is a long way to go. Curls - whether short or long, require a lot of care, because they quickly become knotted and tangled. With a wide-toothed horn comb, curls are perfectly groomed. Due to the smooth structure of the horn, the hair cannot break when combing. Curls are best combed after washing. This enables easy combing through. Dry curls should not be combed. Here it is advisable to gently slide your fingers through the hair. A horn curling comb should be wide-toothed and have rounded teeth. The prongs should be very smooth, which is typical of a horn comb, so that they can slide through the curls without resistance.

Straight, short and medium length hair

Particularly fine hair tends to be electrostatically charged when brushing or combing. A horn comb has antistatic properties. For straight and fine hair, a horn comb is required, the prongs of which are not arranged that far, but rather closer together, in order to bring the hair into shape. With a two-part horn comb with the wide teeth, the hair can first be untangled and then combed smooth with the fine teeth. Teasing is also possible in this way.

From horn to horn comb - this is how the natural material becomes a comb for your hair

In short: cut from the whole horn, sawn by hand and then polished. As clear as these three steps may sound, making horn combs is not that easy. Precise and detailed work is required to make such beautiful horn combs as those made by Holz-Menschen. Each piece is unique. Before production begins, the raw material, the horn, is tested. Horns with cracks and irregularities are sorted out, only a faultless horn is used for processing horn combs. In order for the horn to become soft and malleable, it must be heated. Then the piece of horn is cut to size. A rough sketch on the horn will help determine the size and shape of the comb. Sawing the teeth is considered to be the most difficult job in making the horn comb. The teeth are very sensitive - a high level of concentration and very precise work are essential in this work step. Finally, there is polishing, which takes a lot of time. A horn comb needs to be extremely smooth so that it can glide perfectly through the hair without damaging it.

Care of horn combs

We recommend cleaning the horn comb after every comb. Simply remove the hair that is caught in the comb to avoid unnecessary bacterial growth. Occasionally the horn comb can be cleaned under running water to remove shampoo or hair care products from the horn comb. The horn comb should be oiled from time to time. (Horn balsam oil, fine natural oils or simple salad oil - act briefly, wipe off excess oil with a cloth)
