How do electronic devices make children intelligent?

Artificial intelligence

Self-driving cars, robots in the operating theater or voice assistants with whom we can talk - to some this may sound like the distant future, but such smart machines already exist. They're smart because they have artificial intelligence. It is also called 'AI' for short. But how exactly do AI systems work?

What is Artificial Intelligence?

A calculator, for example, is not artificial intelligence. He can solve complicated calculations, but he only follows arithmetic rules.
Artificially intelligent systems imitate the human brain. Just like us humans, they are able to evaluate and analyze large amounts of information in order to make decisions. And not only that: just like us, AI systems can learn independently.
It works a lot like it does with small children. A young child needs to see a dog several times and learn that it is a dog. Only then has it learned what characteristics a dog has and recognizes it by itself. And not only that: regardless of whether the dog is a German Shepherd or a Pug, the child will be able to distinguish the dog from a cat, although cats also have four paws, a tail and fur.
AI systems learn similarly: after an AI system has analyzed many pictures of dogs and received the information that the animal in the picture is a dog, the system can recognize large and small, light and dark dogs and recognize them from other animals distinguish. And should the system make a mistake and be corrected, it will learn from it.
In contrast to the pocket calculator, an AI system is capable of learning and can develop further independently.

Where is AI in all parts?

AI is already used in many areas. Robots take over many work steps in factories. In the smart home, AI can independently control various electronic devices, such as a thermostat. AI can automatically heat up every room the way the residents like it.

Doctors are supported by AI systems in some hospitals. We find chatbots on the Internet, computer programs that talk to us in writing and answer our questions. And there is also a lot of artificial intelligence hidden in our smartphone. Voice assistants, navigation systems and online translators are some of the applications that would not exist without AI.
We encounter artificial intelligence in many areas and are often of great help. Nevertheless, it is criticized again and again.

Will AI systems take over the world?

Some films show a future in which machines are smarter than we humans and control ourselves. Such a horror vision worries some people. They are afraid that AI could be dangerous for us. You cannot predict what will happen in a thousand years, but a machine that is as smart as we humans will not exist anytime soon.
AI systems are usually very good in a certain area, e.g. when analyzing traffic or calculating the best route from Cologne to Berlin. Humans, on the other hand, can do many things well and even at the same time. Running, talking and perceiving the feelings and reactions of our companion, checking where other passers-by, cars and cyclists are and also checking the weather - these are huge amounts of data that we process at lightning speed without noticing. So far, no artificial intelligence can even come close to achieving this.

Even more criticism of AI

But artificial intelligence also raises complicated questions. In the case of self-driving cars, for example, it is often discussed whether it is okay for an AI system to make the difference between life and death in a dangerous traffic situation. It can happen that the AI system in the car only has the choice of running over a passer-by or crashing into a tree, thereby risking the passengers in the car being injured. Which decision is the right one in such a case? This is a very difficult question that even humans cannot clearly answer.

Another criticism of AI is that artificially intelligent systems are stealing jobs from people. In fact, machines are already replacing human labor in some areas. And this will affect a few more jobs in the future. However, experts say that thanks to AI, new jobs and professions will also be created. Programmers, for example, are likely to continue to be desperately wanted.
