How do we extract data from GPS
If you have an external GPS file in GPX format, you can import / upload the file directly in the komoot app or on the komoot website. It is also possible to export a komoot tour in GPX format in order to use it on an external device.
Exporting komoot tours as GPX files
You can download GPX files from komoot tours both on our website and in the mobile app. The region in which the tour begins must be activated in order to use this option. If it is not activated, we will show you in the shop exactly which region you need for the download.
In the details of each tour you will find the option "Download for GPS device" in the menu on the right-hand side, which you can open in the app via the three dots in the top right corner. This allows you to download the file in GPX format to your device and transfer it from there, e.g. to the app for another device that also supports the GPX format.
The voice navigation and our maps are not part of this export, we only offer these functions in our app.
Import from external GPS files
You have the option to import your tour as a planned or made tour. You can save planned tours and edit them in the route planner so that you can use them later for navigation; tours that have been made are immediately added to the list of tours you have made. Before you save a tour you have already done, you can specify the sport and the date on which you did the tour.
To import a GPS file into the komoot app, go to your profile and open your tour list (made or planned tours). At the top right corner, you can see the "Import" button. Alternatively, you can also use the plus symbol on your profile next to “Tours” and then select “Import file”. You will then be asked to select a GPS file from the storage of your phone, Google Drive or iCloud.
To import GPS files on our website, click on the plus symbol that you can see at the top right of our website next to your profile picture. Select "Import GPS file" here. Then drag a file into the window or click "Upload file" and select it on your computer. Then decide whether you want to import it as a planned or a completed tour.
In the next step you have the option to choose whether komoot should use the original route as it is in the file. Then you select "Follow the original route" when importing. Komoot will insert off-grid sections where your route deviates from known routes. If you choose the "Adapt route to known routes" mode, komoot may lead parts of your route along alternative routes. In this case, the route may differ from the original, but it will enable reliable navigation.
If you save the file as a made tour, it will be added directly to your list of made tours.
Supported file formats for import
Komoot supports GPX, FIT and TCX files.
