Haldwani-Kathgodam is located in the Nainital district on the western bank of the Gaula, which cuts through the Siwaliks immediately north of the city. Haldwani-Kathgodam was created through the merger of Haldwani with the one adjacent to the north Kathgodam. Haldwani-Kathgodam has been a municipal corporation since May 2011. The city of Haldwani goes back to the founding of the city in 1834.

At the 2011 census, Haldwani-Kathgodam had 156,078 inhabitants, including suburbs (outgrowths) 201.461.
