Baptism in other Christian churches

We have already told you a lot about Christian baptism in the Catholic and Protestant Church. But the baptism in the other churches and denominations of Christianity is also a very important festival, which differs in its meaning and implementation in some aspects. Here are some interesting examples:

Orthodox baptism

In Orthodoxy, Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist (First Communion) are linked to one another in a single celebration of integration into Christ and the Church.

When performing the baptism, the person to be baptized is completely submerged (immersion baptism) in order to symbolize “death and resurrection in Christ”. Even small children receive the anointing of myron (corresponds to Confirmation) and communion (in the Orthodox Church always as chalice communion) immediately after their baptism. The Catholic Uniate Churches of the East and the Ancient Near Eastern Churches such as the Coptic Church act in the same way. In addition, there are special prayers for the birth of the child, on the 8th and 40th day after the birth.

Our book tip: The baptismal book: Understanding Christian baptism and helping to shape it creatively - The baptismal register is aimed at parents, godparents and everyone who understands what is happening and who would like to consciously celebrate and shape it. It explains the course of the baptism ceremony in an easy-to-understand manner and provides numerous reading texts and examples for creative design for each section. Price: 14.95 euros (Germany).

Baptist baptism

There is no prescribed liturgy for the Baptist baptism. As a rule, however, it has the following sequence: The person being baptized confesses to Jesus Christ in his own words. Often the personal testimony is followed by the commonly spoken Apostles' Creed. Then the person to be baptized (usually dressed in white) goes into the baptistery or - if the baptism takes place outdoors - into the water where the baptist (pastor or church elder) is already waiting for him. A baptismal message is read out. The person to be baptized is then baptized in the name of the Triune God (and / or in the name of Jesus) by immersing himself once (see picture).

Then the baptized is blessed with the laying on of hands by the elders of the congregation and accepted into the congregation. A sacrament celebration can end the baptismal service.

New Apostolic Baptism

The sacrament of Holy Baptism with water is the first and fundamental communication of grace from the Triune God to man. It is the washing away of original sin and acceptance into the community of those who believe in Jesus Christ and confess him to be their Lord. The triune God opens the way to salvation in Christ. The person to be baptized vows to avoid sin and live his life in following Christ.

Baptism donated in other Christian communities is recognized as valid if it has been performed "rite", that is, in the name of the Triune God and with water.

Underage children can also receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism. When children are baptized, parents profess their faith in the gospel.
