Where are the Hogenakkal waterfalls

This is a brief description of a trip to Hogenakkal in Tamil Nadu, India in February 2008. These waterfalls are practically unknown outside of India. In fact, we were the only non-Indians that day.

At this point it was the dry season. That is why the waterfalls usually did not carry much water. But despite the low water there was at least one strong waterfall. Visiting these falls during the dry season also has an advantage. You can go with boats in the gorge (800 rupees per boat is a fair price; up to 6 people and the boat guide can be accommodated in one boat).

During the dry season you can also swim in the river. In fact, you see many Indians who at least wash themselves in the river, as the river is said to have a healing effect. Still, I wouldn't risk drinking the water. Hogenakkal

Directly behind the exit of the gorge there are many stalls on the river bank. Fish is caught right in the gorge. You can buy these fresh from the fishermen in the gorge and have them prepared in one of the many kitchens on the riverbank.
