What can be the consequences of osteoporosis?
At an advanced stage, osteoporosis leads to the bones becoming porous and less resilient. The result is broken bones even without severe external forces such as falls or accidents.

Bone fractures caused by osteoporosis occur particularly in the following skeletal sections:
Spine (so-called fish and compression vertebrae)
Femoral neck fracture
Wrist, forearm
Above all, vertebral collapses are often not recognized by those affected, the consequences are, among other things, severe back pain, reduction in body size, so-called hunchbacks.

How does the measurement work?
The DEXA measurement (Dual Energy x-ray Absorptiometry) is based on the attenuation (absorption) of X-rays by bones and soft tissues. Two weak X-rays with two different energies are sent through the thigh region or the lumbar spine. Depending on the bone density, the intensity of the X-rays is weakened more or less and this weakening can be measured. The so-called T-value is decisive for the measurement. It indicates whether and how far the measured value deviates from the mean bone density of a healthy 30-year-old.

How can osteoporosis occur?
Osteoporosis (bone loss) is a bone disease with impaired bone strength and an increased risk of bone fractures.
The bone is constantly renewed through what is known as bone remodeling. This allows the skeleton to adapt to the requirements and perform its function as a calcium store.
The risk of developing osteoporosis depends on skeletal formation and the extent of bone mass loss in later life.
The peak bone mass is between the 20th-22nd centuries. Age and depends on the following factors:

  • nutrition
  • Hormonal changes during puberty
  • Physical activity
  • An excessive breakdown of bone mass (negative remodeling balance) can be caused by:
    • Estrogen deficiency after the switch
    • Calcium deficiency, diet low in vitamin D
    • lack of exercise, little sport
    • idiopathic, genetic eating disorders, malabsorption
    • excessive consumption of nicotine, alcohol

The causes and risk factors for osteoporosis already lie in childhood. Therefore, parents and each individual can personally contribute to reducing their risk of developing osteoporosis.

Basically:
The earlier you start a healthy lifestyle, the greater the chances of not getting sick.

The main points about Osteoporosis prevention are:

  • regular exercise / sport adapted to the age and state of health
  • do not smoke
  • low alcoholic beverages or beverages containing phosphate (such as cola etc.)
  • Diet, taking into account that the body is supplied with sufficient calcium and vitamin D (milk and milk products, cheese, etc.)
  • Sunlight promotes the formation of vitamin D under the skin
