Why do so many rappers become actors?

US rapper DMX dies after heart attack

New York - The US rapper and actor DMX died on Friday in a hospital north of New York. This was initially reported by the "People" magazine. The musician was 50 years old. He was rushed to the hospital last Friday after suffering a heart attack, which US media reports suggest was caused by an addictive drug overdose.

Since then, DMX had been artificially ventilated in an intensive care unit, before he was now declared dead, as his family announced. "We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, née Earl Simmons, has passed away at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side at the age of 50," said a press release.

"Get At Me Dog"

The musician became known in the 1990s with hits like "Party Up" and "Get At Me Dog". The rapper was nominated three times for the most important Grammy music award and repeatedly topped the US charts with his songs. He was the first musician whose first four albums each reached number 1 on the Billboard charts. At the turn of the millennium, Simmons sold millions of records worldwide. His live performances were considered energetic and electrified tens of thousands of followers.

The father of allegedly 15 children spoke openly about drug problems in the past and went on several drug rehab cures, most recently in autumn 2019. He was also arrested several times, including for fraud, assault and illegal possession of weapons. DMX pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, drug possession and theft in 2008 and spent time in jail.

Many US music stars had recently worried about the rapper on the Internet, including singer Missy Elliott and musician Machine Gun Kelly. In the past few days, hundreds of fans had held vigils in front of the hospital in White Plains and prayed for DMX. They played his biggest hits, some fans danced in the street.
