Can You Freeze Cooked Rice?

Q. I made a large pot of rice and left a lot. I want to freeze it, but I'm not sure I can. Can You Freeze Cooked Rice?

A. Rice is an inexpensive staple food that can be eaten for a long time to prepare. It is easily made in large batches and can also be frozen for convenience. Cooked rice freezes well. Having a serving of frozen rice on hand can cut meal prep time considerably, and it can add life to stir fries, soups, and casseroles. All types of rice can be frozen, including white, brown, and wild. Rice can also be seasoned or mixed with vegetables like peas for quick stews.

Cook rice according to package instructions. Rice can be frozen as soon as it is cool enough and no longer gives off steam. If you don't plan on freezing rice right after it's cooked, keep the cooked and cooled rice in the refrigerator to prevent the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. When you're ready to freeze the rice, either freeze it in sturdy plastic freezer containers with moisture-proof lids or in freezer bags. It is a good idea to freeze the rice in one-meal serving sizes so that all you need to do is thaw what you need to make a meal. A good rule of thumb is freezing rice in one cup batches.

Freeze rice in a plastic container, scoop rice into the container, leaving about an inch between the rice and the lid to allow expansion. Secure the lid and label the container with the name and date the rice was frozen. If you are freezing rice in plastic freezer bags, fill the bags with rice, then flatten, removing excess air before sealing completely. Store label and date pouches with a permanent marker and stacked flat in the freezer, one pouch stacked on top of each other to save space.

If properly stored, frozen rice should be stored in the freezer for at least six months.

To reheat the frozen rice, remove the rice from the freezer and thaw it in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. Frozen rice can also be steamed in the microwave by freezing it by gently opening the freezer bag and reheating it according to the direction of the microwave. The freezer bag acts as a steamer and uses the liquid from the frozen rice to reheat it. When adding rice to a pan or other dry dish, a tablespoon or two of water added to the rice while it is cooking can help keep the grains soft and moist.
