What is the best brand of GPS

The best navigation device

Navigation devices for cars, which used to be so popular, are suffering from the boom in smartphones. Finally, a mobile phone is also suitable for conveniently navigating from A to B. According to the Home Electronics Market Index Germany (HEMIX), sales of portable and built-in navigation systems fell by a whopping 21.6 percent in 2018.

With Becker, Falk and Navigon, several well-known manufacturers have now disappeared from the market, TomTom and Garmin are now cutting off the biggest pieces of the navigation pie, and there are also some new smaller providers.

In our test, we let a total of 21 candidates compete against each other, 17 of which are currently still available. Those who can do without frills and up-to-date traffic information will also find good alternatives in the inexpensive segment.

Brief overview: Our recommendations

Our favourite

Garmin Drivesmart 65

Great screen, lavish features, fast operation and reliable navigation: the Garmin has earned its place in the sun.

Navigating is fun: you can see every detail on the 6.95-inch display of the Garmin Drivesmart 65. Operation is easy, even by voice, and the equipment is extensive. There are also full points for the reliable route guidance.

Good as well

TomTom Go Premium

The TomTom Go Premium brings its owners reliably to their destination and scores with up-to-date traffic reports.

The TomTom Go Premium impresses with its clean route guidance, interference-free GPS reception and free map updates. The TomTom stands out from the competition primarily through its up-to-date and reliable traffic reports. Here the Go Premium with its live traffic is the measure of all things.

Good & cheap

TomTom Go Essential

Somewhat worse equipped than the Go 5200, the TomTom Go Essential can still score with good route guidance and numerous extras.

The TomTom Go Essential guides the driver safely and comfortably to their destination, provides precise information, an easy-to-read display and a fast destination search. The equipment includes a speakerphone as well as support from Siri and Google Assistant.

Good instructions

Garmin DriveSmart 61

Garmin has always mastered the helpful driving instructions and the lifelike presentation on the display.

The Garmin DriveSmart 61 also has free map updates for Europe. It receives traffic reports via DAB +, which works free of charge and without a cellular connection - unlike TomTom. The visually appealing lane assistant is a treat.

With camera

Garmin DriveAssist 51

The Garmin uses the integrated camera for additional functions such as a lane assistant, and it is also used as a dashcam.

Another recommendable device from Garmin is the DriveAssist 51. As a special feature, it has a rear camera, which means it can also be used as a dashcam. Whether you need that is a matter of taste. The lane assistant makes more sense.
