The quantities of acetylcholine found by Kapfhammer in the blood and in the tissues cannot of course be present there in a free, physiologically active form. On the one hand, free acetylcholine would immediately be subject to cleavage by the esterase of the blood, etc., on the other hand, the amount found (28 mg in liter of blood) is incompatible with previous ideas about the pharmacological effectiveness of this substance. It would have to be in a bound, easily split off form, so to speak in “standby form”.
